How a garden waterfall works
The AQUASCAPE PONDLESS SYSTEM is generally lower-maintenance than the ground it replaces.
- Underground reservoir — The water flows down into an underground reservoir where it cools during hot days.
- IonGen — releases copper ions that disrupt algae cell membranes and inhibit growth.
- Strategic planting — Plants are placed strategically along the streambed, absorbing phosphorus and nitrate before algae can.
- Autodoser — automatically adds a special blend that counteracts algae and limescale deposits.

Questions & Answers
Do you need a pond for the stream?
No. The Aquascape Pondless System™ is standalone — the water circulates in a hidden basin beneath the rocks. No open water surface, no fish responsibilities, and no algae bloom issues.
What is an Aquascape Pondless System™?
A closed water circuit without an open pond. Water is pumped up to a waterfall, flows along the stream, and collects in a hidden basin beneath the rocks — then the cycle repeats. Maintenance-free, safe for children and naturally beautiful.
Do I need a building permit?
A waterfall or stream normally requires neither a building permit nor a notification. (If the ground level changes by more than 50 cm, a grading permit may be required for the earthworks.) Check with your municipality if unsure.
How do you maintain a stream?
Minimal maintenance: flush the pumps once a year and clear any leaves from the pump intake. No chemicals, no water testing.
Does the stream work in winter?
Yes. It can run all winter with lower power consumption, or be turned off entirely — the system takes no damage from freezing.
Can you have lighting in the stream?
Yes, LED lighting is included in most of our stream packages.
Can I claim a tax deduction for a waterfall or stream?
The components of an Aquascape Pondless System™ may qualify as LOD (local stormwater management). We are currently investigating this in practice.
