Aquascape Nature Pool Sweden. Clarity without endless upkeep.
The self-cleansing nature pool you've seen online is now in Sweden. Built by Sweden's Aquascape™ Team. Anywhere in Europe.
A self-cleansing nature pool — now in Sweden
Imagine swimming in crystal-clear water without the downsides. Without the chlorine trap of a swimming pool. Without the salt wear of a saltwater pool. And without the algae stress of a conventional nature pool.
Just a dreamlike place where nature does the heavy lifting year-round.
It may sound like magic — but it's biology.
BÄCKAHÄSTEN design self-cleansing nature pools in Sweden and across Europe, powered by Aquascape Ecosystem™.
We call it SagaPool.

Award-winning nature pools from Australia to Sweden
Case: Crafers Aquatic Habitat — Adelaide Hills, Australia
Deb & Jim Fazzalari dreamt of a sanctuary from the noise of everyday life. A beautiful, low-maintenance nature pool topped their wishlist. The couple turned to Corrie and Malcolm (BÄCKAHÄSTEN's project lead) at SA Waterscapes. 10 weeks later their sanctuary was complete: Crafers Aquatic Habitat.
An ecosystem with over 300 plant species, bubbling waterfalls and crystal-clear water. The frogs, dragonflies and birds came back.
"This is our sanctuary from the madness of everyday life. We just sit and listen to the water running and it blocks out all the traffic … you hear nature and it's beautiful."
— Deb Fazzalari, Crafers
Master Landscaper Award 2020. "A unique project that was as impressive behind the scenes as it was visually. This project involves the skills of a professional with a passion, displayed in the exceptional rock placements. The ambience and tranquility are amazing." — Master Landscaper South Australia (MLSA).
Clarity without the constant monitoring
Aquascape Ecosystem™ is the world's most chosen system for water features like nature pools for a reason. The constant nutrient deficit prevents algae from taking over — without you having to measure and dose chemicals or replace filters.
How an Aquascape Ecosystem™ Pool works
- Filtration (Intake Bay) — The water surface is kept clear by a powerful pump. Leaves, grass and pollen gather in the bay while suspended particles are caught in a gravel filter.
- Neutralisation (IonGen) — On the way to the filtration, the water is treated with copper ions. These bind to algae cell membranes and prevent cell division.
- Purification (Wetland Filter) — The water is pressed up through a planted gravel bed. Flow slows by ~90 % to let the roots absorb the algae's nutrient sources.
- Oxygen & movement (streams, waterfalls & jets) — On the way back, the water is oxygenated. Oxygen supports key bacteria while movement prevents dead zones where algae could take hold.
- Shade (strategic planting) — Aquatic plants in the streams keep binding nutrients. They also add shade, which helps keep the water cool.
- Balancing (Autodoser) — Automatic dosing of a special blend of beneficial bacteria that complement the living cycle.
Your role in the ecosystem
Unlike a chlorine pool, maintenance feels familiar and natural. The same principle that applies in the garden applies here: if you do a little regularly, it stays easy.
Ongoing: empty surface debris after a swim, remove wilted leaves when you pass, prune when you feel like it. Seasonal: backwash the filter (early spring), clear plants (late autumn).
Don't want to lift a finger? We offer ongoing maintenance or annual service as an add-on.
Even easier over time
Year one: before the ecosystem establishes, some algae bloom may appear — especially around streams and waterfalls. This is completely normal and doesn't stop anyone from swimming. Year two: the young ecosystem has established, and the system can take care of itself. Occasional algae are part of a natural ecosystem.
We adapt your nature pool to Nordic conditions by frost-proofing and insulating pipes and pump housings. The water keeps bubbling in winter with lower electricity consumption.
That's why 100,000+ have already chosen Aquascape Ecosystem™.
Turn your nature pool into an aquarium & get a helping hand
A nature pool with Aquascape Ecosystem™ can host native fish and aquatic organisms. They contribute to the ecosystem's balance and make the experience more vibrant — frogs, dragonflies, birds and butterflies return to the garden.
Pool-o-nomics
A smarter investment
The investment in an Aquascape™ nature pool is about 20 % higher than a comparable swimming pool. But it's the closest thing to lakeside living without moving. In every way.
365 days of joy
An Aquascape™ nature pool can bubble and be used year-round. Electricity consumption adapts to the season's needs. A swimming pool gives you ~90 days of season — but how many are eaten up by maintenance?
Up to 75 % less maintenance
An Aquascape™ nature pool requires no more than ~1–2 hours of maintenance per month. The ecosystem takes care of the balance for you. A typical swimming pool (~32 m²) can require ~3–4 hours per week during peak season.
Increased property value
Valuations before and after building Crafers Aquatic Habitat showed Jim & Deb got twice their investment back. A regular swimming pool at best breaks even at sale — until you add in years of running costs.
We call it the Lakeside Effect.
Rainwater harvesting = combine utility with enjoyment
An optional Rainwater Harvesting System captures rain from roof and paved surfaces and stores it in an underground reservoir. The rainwater becomes part of the self-cleansing cycle and can be used for automatic top-up, irrigation and emergencies.
BONUS: The underground storage also helps stabilise temperature during hot summer days.
Did you know? Just 25 mm of rain on a 185 m² roof yields 4,700 litres. According to SMHI, typical annual precipitation in Sweden varies between 500–800 mm in most regions. That means the same roof can collect 90,000–150,000 litres per year — enough to top up the system and irrigate the garden.
Customers Deb and Jim went all the way. Overflow from their Aquascape Ecosystem is directed to a 100,000-litre Rainwater Harvesting System under the veranda — and supplies the whole household with water.
"We do have mains water but we turn it off — we don't need it."
— Deb Fazzalari, Adelaide Hills, Australia
From the world's largest nature pool to your garden
In 2019 our project lead took part in building what would become the world's largest nature pool: Lake Gkula in Woodford, Australia. But it resembled a lake more than a nature pool. The plan was grand… and the requirements long:
- 125 m sandy beach. 5.5 m deep.
- 16+ native fish species and crustaceans.
- 9,000 local aquatic plants.
- And several dramatic waterfalls.
A total of 12 million litres of naturally filtered water without chemicals. And there's only one system that can do it: Aquascape Ecosystem™.
FUN FACT: Our project lead named one of the waterfalls after his Swedish girlfriend.
Sustainable Landscape Award 2020.
"We know Lake Gkula will be an attraction; it's that beautiful."
— Bill Hauritz, Founder of Woodfordia

Questions & Answers
How much does a nature pool cost?
Our packages for Aquascape™ nature pools in Sweden start at €113,000 incl. VAT for a Cove (7 × 5 m). But nature pools can be made smaller or larger depending on your wishes. The price varies with size, decking materials and the number of streams and waterfalls. We offer both ready-made packages and fully bespoke design. Contact us for a free consultation.
How does a nature pool work without chlorine?
Aquascape Ecosystem™ Pool combines six mechanisms: mechanical filtration, ionisation, biological purification via the wetland filter, oxygenation, strategic planting and automatic bacterial dosing. Together they create a constant state of nutrient deficit — algae are starved out without chemicals.
Can you swim in a nature pool in winter?
The system is adapted for Nordic conditions and runs year-round. Swim season depends on your personal preference. A heating add-on is available.
How much maintenance does a nature pool require?
Ongoing: empty surface debris from one spot after a swim, remove wilted leaves when needed and prune plants when you feel like it. Seasonal: backwash filter in early spring and clear plants in late autumn. Everything else is handled by the ecosystem. Once established, it's about 15–20 minutes per week.
Do I need a building permit for a nature pool?
Typically no permit is required for in-ground pools without above-ground structures, but regulations vary by municipality. We guide you through it during the planning process.
Why does the nature pool become easier to maintain over time?
Purification is handled by biological processes that strengthen over time. The more plants, microorganisms and beneficial bacteria establish, the less you need to do. During the first season some algae bloom may occur. But from year two the biological cycle begins to take over. Then it just becomes more beautiful and easier to maintain every season — the opposite of other systems.
Is the nature pool safe for children?
Yes, but swimming should always be supervised — just like in a swimming pool. The difference is there are no irritating chemicals that can cause allergic reactions. We can also make the pool even safer for children by making it shallower at the edges and deeper in the middle, so it's easier to get out.
How large does the plot need to be?
A nature pool with Aquascape Ecosystem™ needs space for both the basin and the Wetland Filter. As a guideline you need around 40–50 m² total — but unlike ordinary swimming pools, the shape can be adapted freely to your garden.
