A natural pool is the quietest luxury a Nordic garden can hold: swimming in clear water without chlorine, framed by natural stone and aquatic plants. But what does it actually cost?

What does a natural pool cost in 2026?
Our three natural pool packages are built on the Aquascape Ecosystem™ and delivered complete: excavation, membrane, natural stone, Wetland Filter, stream with waterfall, pump system, auto-doser and planting.

What drives the price of a natural pool?
The material cost of a natural pool looks different from a chlorine pool. The heaviest line item is not tiling or a pool shell — it is tonnage.
- Natural stone and gravel. A package involves more than 30 tonnes of stone and 11–21 tonnes of gravel. Stone and freight prices vary sharply between regions, and that is the single biggest reason for the ±25% range.
- The Wetland Filter. The filter equals roughly 25% of the pool surface and is what keeps the water at swimming quality year round. Cutting it back means cutting biological capacity.
- Site conditions. Rock in the excavation, poor machine access, a sloping plot or long stone haulage all translate directly into labour hours.
- Stream and waterfall drop. Oxygenation happens in the movement. A larger drop means more stone, more membrane and more build time.
- Economies of scale. Cost per square metre falls as size grows. Site setup, machine transport and the pump housing are the same job whether the pool is 21 or 36 m².
How does the price compare to a regular swimming pool?
The investment in a natural pool is roughly 30% higher than a comparable swimming pool. But stopping at the purchase price is misleading, because a natural pool is used more days per year and costs less to run.
65% fewer days of maintenance: a regular swimming pool gives a 90-day season minus approx. 6 days of total maintenance = 84 days left. An Aquascape Ecosystem™ Pool gives 365 days minus approx. 2 days of total maintenance = 363 days left.
65% lower cost per day: a chlorine pool at 700,000 SEK across 84 days is roughly 8,333 SEK per day in year one. A natural pool at 1,000,000 SEK across 363 days is roughly 2,754 SEK per day.
The difference comes from the fact that the natural pool is never shut down. We frost-proof pipes and pump housing, the water circulates all winter, and the pool becomes an ice-free mirror instead of a tarpaulin.
What does a natural pool cost to run?
Running costs are, in practice, electricity for the pump, bacteria for the auto-doser and plant material when needed. There is no chlorine, no pH adjuster and no shock treatment.
The work involved is approx. 1–2 hours a month for a pool of about 20 m² once the ecosystem has established (years 2–3): you empty the collection point, remove wilted leaves and thin plants at the turn of the season. The filter is backflushed once a year.
The system also gets cheaper over time. An Aquascape Ecosystem becomes more self-sufficient as plants and micro-organisms establish — the opposite of a chemical system, which tends to demand more with every year.

Frequently asked questions about natural pool prices
What does the smallest natural pool cost?
Our smallest package, Cove (S) at 21 m² of swimming surface, costs approx. €85,000 incl. VAT. The pool can be made smaller than the package size, but the Wetland Filter still needs to equal roughly 25% of the surface for the water to hold swimming quality.
Why does the price vary by ±25%?
The largest variable is natural stone and freight. A package involves more than 30 tonnes of stone, and the price per tonne differs significantly between regions. On top of that, site conditions such as rock, slope and access affect labour hours.
Are the stream and waterfall included in the price?
Yes. Every package includes a stream with a waterfall of approx. 1.5–2 m drop. It is not decoration but part of the filtration: the movement oxygenates the water for the bacteria that keep nutrient levels down.
Is a building permit required for a natural pool?
No, a natural pool normally requires neither a building permit nor a notification in Sweden. If ground level changes by more than 50 cm, a ground permit may be needed for the earthworks. Check with your municipality if unsure.
Are there additional costs for winter?
No. The natural pool does not need to be shut down or drained. We frost-proof pipes and pump housing for your zone, and the pump keeps running — which is also what keeps the water open and oxygenated.
Is a natural pool more expensive to maintain than a chlorine pool?
No, the opposite. There is no chemistry and no testing. Maintenance means collecting leaves, emptying the collection point and thinning plants — roughly 1–2 hours a month once established.
